Good for the Body, Better for the Mind

It may still be cold and windy outside but the warmer weather is just around the corner and there’ll be no better time to exercise outdoors. There are many reasons why working up a sweat in the great outdoors makes us feel good. Gorgeous views, sun on our faces and getting away from the hustle and bustle of a packed gym, to name a few.

Exercising outdoors provides all the physical benefits as indoor exercise does:

  • Increased blood flow
  • Improved cardiovascular health
  • Improved strength
  • Flexibility
  • Endurance
  • Plus many many more

Any form of exercise is beneficial to Mental Health as it allows us to free ourselves from the stress and strains of our busy work schedules, but if you are prone to Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), exercising outside is even more beneficial. SAD is linked to poor concentration, lethargy, low moods and lack of Vitamin D so being outdoors surrounded by nature and more importantly, the boost of Vitamin D from exposure to sunlight could vastly improve your life.

Donna and the team fully recognise how important getting outdoors is and so have been developing our outdoor timetable which will launch very soon. Throughout the Spring and Summer months you’ll be able to enjoy early morning workouts on the beach with John, taking in the sunrise while giving your day a much needed boost! Morning exercise kick starts your metabolism and leaves you reaping the mental benefits of exercise all day…what’s not to love?

If Beach Boot Camp, Run Club, Metafit and Walking Groups sound good to you, keep your eyes peeled for our brand new Outdoor Timetable! But for now, view our recently updated Gym Class Timetable here.

During the pandemic we’ve all been advised to stay indoors and this has had a huge impact on our mental and physical health. With the support of the YMCA Gym team, we’re encouraging people to get involved with Workout to Help Out and get motivated again to help fight the risks of Covid-19.
