What is Duke of Edinburgh(DofE)?

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is a youth development programme where participants must complete four sections: Volunteering, Physical, Skills, and an Expedition. For the Physical section, a student must choose a sport or fitness activity and show consistent improvement over a set period (usually 3 or 6 months). A “qualified person” must sign off on their progress at the end.

What YMCA Gym is offering

The gym is essentially saying: “We will help you pass your award by giving you a structured plan and the official signature you need.”

  • The 12-Week Programme This matches the 3-month requirement for the Bronze award. They will give you a specific workout plan so you aren’t just “wandering around” the gym; you’ll have data to prove you improved.

  • The Induction: Before you start the 12-week programme, you have to do the standard U18 Induction that all teens must do to use the equipment.

  • The Deadline: We want you signed up by the end of January. If you start later than January, you won’t finish your 12 weeks in time for the gym to sign off your progress before the deadline.

What you need to do next:

    1. Book an Induction

    2. Talk to the Gym Staff: Tell them, “I’m doing my DofE Physical section and want to start the 12-week programme.”

    3. Bring your DofE info: You will eventually need the gym’s contact details (or a specific trainer’s name) so they can sign you off at the end.
