Keeping Fit In The Colder Months
As the colder months roll in, it can be tough to stay motivated to keep fit. However, with the right approach, you can maintain an active lifestyle while embracing the season. Whether you prefer outdoor activities or indoor workouts, there are plenty of ways to stay healthy and energized through the winter months.
Dress for the weather
One of the easiest ways to stay active in colder weather is to simply embrace it! Outdoor activities like walking, running, and cycling can be refreshing in the crisp winter air, but the trick is to layer up and stay warm.
Layer up – Start with a thin base layer such as a turtleneck, or thermal top, before adding a thermal mid layer, such as a fleece to trap heat and keep your body warm. Finally, finish with a waterproof outer layer to protect you from rain, snow, and wind.
Cover your extremities – Much of our body heat is lost through our head, hands, and feet. With this in mind, don’t forget to cover up these extremities with a warm set of gloves, scarf, and a hat.
Warm Up Indoors – Before heading outside, it’s important to warm up indoors. Doing 5 minutes of light stretching, star jumps, and jogging on the spot will get your blood flowing, prevent injury, and make stepping out into that chilly winter air just that little bit easier!
Exercise Indoors
Indoor Fitness is a great way to stay active as the weather gets colder, and there are many ways for you to stay active without braving the bleak winter weather.
Join a gym or fitness class – Taking part in a fitness class is a great way for you to exercise indoors, whilst trying something new! Whether it’s spinning, HIIT, or yoga, there are plenty of classes for you to stay fit throughout the winter.
Try at-home workouts – If you prefer to exercise at home, there’s a wealth of online resources available. From YouTube tutorials to fitness apps, you can easily find guided workouts that require minimal equipment.
Prioritise Recovery and Your Immune System
During the colder months, recovery and immune health are just as important as staying active. Here are just a few ways to prioritise your health and help fight off illness as we move through the winter season.
Get adequate rest – Rest is essential for muscle recovery and overall health. As colder weather can be associated with fatigue and muscle stiffness, it is hugely important to ensure that you are gaining enough sleep and downtime to allow your body to reset and rechard.
Stay Hydrated – Hydration is just as important in the winter as it is in summer. Cold, dry air can cause dehydration, so it’s greatly important to drink plenty of water to replenish your fluids.
Boost your immune system – Whilst regular exercise is great for your health and fitness, it’s important to pair this with a healthy diet rich in vitamins and minerals such as vitamins C, D, and zinc, to help fend off seasonal colds and reduce your risk of experiencing seasonal illnesses.
Stay Safe
Safety should always come first when exercising in colder weather. The drop in temperature, slippery conditions, and reduced daylight can all present hazards, but with a few precautions, you can stay safe when exercising throughout the winter.
Wear Appropriate Footwear – Make sure to choose shoes with good grip to prevent slips, trips, and falls on wet or icy surfaces. Well-insulated and water-resistant footwear can also help keep your feet warm and dry when exercising outdoors.
Be Visible – Whether you’re jogging, cycling, or going on a winter walk, it’s important that you are visible to others when exercising in winter. With shorter days and reduced daylight, it’s important to consider wearing reflective clothing, accessories, and lights to ensure you can be seen by drivers and fellow pedestrians
Buddy-Up – Working out with a friend or group can help keep you motivated and make outdoor exercise safer. Having a buddy can be especially important during winter, as it adds an extra layer of safety in case of an injury or unexpected weather changes.
With the help of these tips, you can continue to enjoy exercise all year-round. Let’s keep moving and working towards your fitness goals throughout the colder months!
