Inclusive Classes for All!
At YMCA North Tyneside we pride ourselves on being a community who support each other, no matter a person’s background or situation. Encouraging people to be themselves often leads to remarkable things. This story of one of our members proves that to be very true indeed.
Rhys*, who has Down Syndrome and Autism, has been attending our popular Thursday night Clubbercise classes with his mum and dad for years now. Initially Rhys would sit in the stairwell with his dad, ear-defenders on, while waving a glowstick given to him by Donna, our Gym Manager – that was all he was comfortable with. Step by step over the course of 2-3 years, Rhys made it into the Main Hall and even began to participate in the dancing. It was just a few songs at first and now Rhys is up at the front of the class, without ear defenders, bopping away to the beat.
Along with his parents, we are so proud of how far Rhys has come and we love seeing how happy and chatty he is when he’s surrounded by other members in the Clubbercise classes. Long may it continue!
How Do I Get Involved?
You don’t have to be physically fit, confident, or even look the part when you join our classes at YMCA Gym. You are joining a community of individuals who would love nothing more than to see you shine and enjoy yourself.
An all inclusive YMCA Gym membership costs as little as £12.95 per month. Or classes are available on a Pay-As-You-Go basis. See website for details.
Early December, Cafe 1879 hosted YMCA Gym’s Annual Christmas Lunch where 29 of our members attended, enjoying an afternoon of celebrations and a delicious 3-course meal.
It may still be cold and windy outside but the warmer weather is just around the corner and there’ll be no better time to exercise outdoors. There are many reasons why working up a sweat in the great outdoors makes us feel good. Gorgeous views, sun on our faces and getting away from the hustle and bustle of a packed gym, to name a few.
As the New Year approaches, new January starters will come flooding through our gym doors. For some, it will be their first time stepping foot in a gym, for others it won’t be their first time restarting their fitness journey. Whatever their situation may be, it’s especially important to be kind, have empathy and welcome the new members into our gym community with encouraging smiles.
YMCA is now offering a new membership for those who like the flexibility of sweating it out at home.
As of 29th March 2021, outdoor exercise is permitted as part of the Governments Road map out of lockdown. With this in mind, YMCA Gym has launched a number of fun and engaging outdoor classes in North Shields.
During the pandemic we’ve all been advised to stay indoors and this has had a huge impact on our mental and physical health. With the support of the YMCA Gym team, we’re encouraging people to get involved with Workout to Help Out and get motivated again to help fight the risks of Covid-19.
